Perspective

This looks scary, but amazing at the same time. This makes me think of how people look at things in the world. For example, the way I design something, someone may take it totally off. And that's why I am always nervous for Evaluations-- which is coming up in 2 weeks or less!

The only thing that I can do is talk about each of my work specifically and try to get the first and third year teacher see my work the way I see it. That's what makes me think that Graphic Design is so hard (compared to Math, English etc.), everyone has their own perspective on things. With Math and English, you have only 1 right answer, whereas Graphic Design, it's so open.

Michael Bierut

For one of my classes (Client Services and Relations), I got a chance to research a design superstar. Going into this project, I had no idea who I wanted to research. Nixson, a friend of mine from the class, who recently read about Michael Bierut referred me to him so I said, "why not, it'll be fun!"

After doing a lot of research, I found out that this guy is quite amazing! I can totally relate to him with the way he works with his clients.  He is a designer that works alongside with his client, and that's exactly how I work.

I have an interesting video I'd like to share with my viewers. It's a video about Michael Bierut talking about his 5 secrets of client work, which if any of you here do, this video is GREAT!

Link to video: http://the99percent.com/videos/6056/Michael-Bierut-5-Secrets-from-86-Notebooks

If you don't want to watch the whole 19 and so minutes of the video, here's the 5 secrets he talks about:
1. Listen first, then design
2. Don't avoid the obvious
3. The problem contains the solution
4. Indulge your obsession
5. Love is the answer

Layouts

I've been designing for over 7 years and I haven't really done much with layout wise and that's why I am really excited for next year in 3rd year.

With that said, I've been looking at a lot of layout (grid work) and here is one that really interests me.

Even though it looks scattered, learning how to lay out the body copy and header properly will make it so neat. I absolutely like it how the one can totally not follow the rules and make it work so well.

Here are also a few that I like. (and this is what I plan on focusing on in the next couple of months):

Big Company?

So I came across this picture while searching for a data plan for my phone. As soon as I saw this, I was thinking to myself, "Really? One of the biggest mobile network company can't even hire a decent designer/photo editor?" Honestly? Little details like so makes all the differences!

There's actually more than 1 thing wrong here; the Apple logo was edited/removed poorly and the screenshot looks too fake with no reflection continuing through. It looks as though they inner shadowed the screen way too much, along with not having the split reflection from the top right go down the rest of the screen.

Oh well, what can ya do? I might give them an email with my contact list and portfolio on it. ;)

Pending Client Work...

So the other day I got asked to design a logo for a person on the internet.

I've known him for a while now and he agreed to pay me x amount. After 2 days of working on the logo, him and "his friend" loved the logo. Unfortunately, he ended up saying that his friend thinks that i am "charging too much".

It made me extremely mad because I spend a lot of time on it and I don't even think he has a "friend" working on this project with him. Let's hope he doesn't end up using the logo without paying me...

Lesson Learned: Everything needs to be written out via email or something, making it MORE official.

Subliminal Messages Are Still In.

Wednesday night I had to babysit a neighbor's little girl who's 8 years old. After all the assignment that I just went through this week, so I decided to watch a movie with her called Tangled. Now, before I watch a movie, I go research about it. Google, YouTube, see how great it is. That's when I stumbled pass something that looks very different, and it bothered me. I kept looking at this picture going, why am I so intrigued by this image? I turned by head to the left, then to the right, trying to see why. Here's the picture that I found and was so intrigued with:

I stared at it for a good 5 minutes. Then I saw it. Do you see what I see? (take a second to look at it, then scroll down)

Dieline Package

Here's another school project that I got assigned and I really like the outcome.

The colour that I've used is very subtle, fun and cool. I can actually see this as a new package for Birth Control.

Well, here is a rational for this package as well:

Rational: I wanted to design something that would be fun because this is a package that 18+ girls/womsn would use daily. With that said, I went with the colour purple and different shades to keep it interesting. I thought that just the colour purple wouldn't be "fun" enough, so I made a circle pattern in the front. And as you can see, there are exactly 28 circles in the front, which represents the 28 pills. (Back of package has 28 as well). Inside the package, I made a nice calendar to keep track of pills. The size I've chosen to go with is a nice pocket size where it can be placed in a women's pocket, purse and still have space for other things because we all know  girls love to carry along with them everything!

Restaurant Logo

Today I'd like to blog about a logo design that I've created for a school project: Restaurant Branding

Here is a Rational explaining why.

Rational: Castelo De Lisboa, translated to English means Castle of Lisbon, Lisbon being the capital and heart of Portugal. I've chosen the colours red, green and yellow because those are the colours of the Portuguese flag. In the background, you noticed the 3 pillars of the castles which is an important symbol of the portuguese national emblem. Lastly, you'll also notice a hidden cross right in the middle of the logo because most Portuguese people are Catholic.

(if this was a real restaurant, I would love to go)

Target targets Zellers...

This morning I turned on my Mac at school, like every other day, and went on TheRecord.com to see what's new. Here's an article that caught my attention: Target aims for Canada with $1.83 billion takeover of Zellers locations.

Here's a glimpse at the article:
"Zellers stores across Canada will begin to disappear starting next year as major U.S. retailer Target moves into many of their locations across the country"

It makes me sad to see another Canadian company go down like that. I always look at the Zellers logo every time I come across one. It has something to do with the way the logo is slanted upwards and the way the "Z" connected with the "e". Brilliant.

Oh well, that's life for you. Things come and go, even big companies like so.

I have no other choice, in a few years, but to give Target a chance.
